AQUARIUM INDUSTRIES WELCOMES DR ROB JONES, "THE AQUARIUM VET" TO OUR TEAM
Rob, who will be assisting our Quality Control team during regular visits, has been passionate about animals all of his life - he decided to become a vet at the age of 12!
After graduating with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) from Melbourne University in 1977, Rob started work as a Vet in Melbourne and later in a country practice before returning to Melbourne in 1979 to the Dandenong Veterinary Hospital, where he still occasionally practices.
Having always had an interest in fish, Rob decided to follow it as a career by commencing in 1999 a part-time Masters qualification in Aquaculture at Deakin University, Warrnambool. In March 2003 he attended the Advanced Fish Medicine course at the University of Florida, USA, and in 2008 passed the examinations for Aquatic Animal Health for the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists (at this stage the highest level of specialized examinations for fish anywhere in the world). This makes Rob one of only a handful of vets in private practice with this qualification.
Rob is also an AQIS-accredited veterinarian for the preparation and inspection of companion animals for export.
In September 1999, Rob commenced with the Melbourne Aquarium as their Veterinarian. He now spends many hours working with fish and sharks and is one of the few veterinarians in the world who regularly performs ultrasound examinations on sharks. He was a key member of the team that performed the first Artificial Insemination in a shark in the world in July 2005. Rob has also been involved in the air transport of sharks to Japan and maintains regular contact with veterinarians at other aquaria around the world, including visits and providing advice.
Rob’s years of experience will add to AI’s 40 years of accumulated fish care knowledge.
